Ronald Rugumayo’s remarkable September continued at Entebbe Club on Saturday as the Ugandan claimed his third title in as many weeks.
Rugumayo won the Pearl of Africa Golf Series event after closing with a two-under-par 69 for a 13-under total of 200. His rounds of 67, 64 and 69 gave him a four-shot victory at the par-71 Entebbe course.
The triumph extends a dominant spell which began with his long-awaited victory at the Johnnie Walker Uganda Professionals Golf Open earlier this month.
Rugumayo won the Uganda Open at Uganda Golf Club with a nine-under aggregate of 279, beating Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko by four strokes.
That success made him the first Ugandan to win the professional national Open since Deo Akope in 2014.
One week later, Rugumayo moved to Entebbe Club and produced another commanding performance in the second leg of the MTN Pro Tee.
He finished that 71-hole competition at 16-under-par 268, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Abraham Ainamani.
Rugumayo also set a new Entebbe Club course record with an eight-under 63 during the third round before closing with 64.
Saturday’s Pearl of Africa victory completed another winning week, giving Rugumayo three successive titles across three different professional competitions.
He began the final round three shots clear at 11-under after rounds of 67 and 64, with Okoko again among his closest challengers.
Rugumayo immediately strengthened his position with birdies on the first, fifth, seventh and ninth holes during the final round.
He dropped shots at the eighth, 10th and 17th but another birdie on the 14th helped him sign for 69 and retain control.
Malawi’s Paul Chidale and Okoko shared second position on nine-under 204, leaving Rugumayo four shots clear at the top.
England’s Matt Millar and South Africa’s Slade Pickering finished another shot back, tied for fourth on eight-under 205.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling, and I really don’t know what to say,” Rugumayo said after sealing another victory.
He dedicated the achievement to Ugandans and those who have contributed towards the development of his career and the sport locally.
The victory also handed Rugumayo his maiden Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing title, with the Pearl of Africa tournament marking the circuit’s first event staged in Uganda.
His September run now reads Uganda Professionals Open champion, MTN Pro Tee champion and Pearl of Africa Golf Series champion, an extraordinary sequence across three consecutive weeks.
And after winning twice at Entebbe Club during that run, Rugumayo has turned the lakeside course into the latest stage for the richest spell of his professional career.
