Emma Ogwang, Godwin Okoko and Willy Deus Kitata produced contrasting rounds to share the Pearl of Africa Golf Series lead at Entebbe Club.
The Ugandan trio returned matching rounds of 5-under-par 66 during the opening day, establishing a one-stroke advantage over their closest challengers.
Although the three players finished level, their scorecards revealed different approaches across the par-71 Entebbe course.
Ogwang produced the most eventful round, combining 6 birdies with the only bogey recorded by the joint leaders.
He opened with a birdie on the par-five first hole but followed it with 9 consecutive pars.
The Ugandan then accelerated on the back nine, making birdies at Nos. 11, 13 and 14.
A bogey at the par-five 15th briefly interrupted his momentum, but Ogwang recovered with another birdie at No. 16.
He completed his round with a birdie at the par-five closing hole, signing for a back-nine score of 32.
Okoko reached the same total without dropping a shot throughout his opening round.
He birdied the opening hole before recording 8 successive pars to reach the turn at 1-under-par.
Okoko made his move on the inward nine, collecting birdies at Nos. 10, 14, 15 and 18.
His bogey-free round contained 5 birdies and 13 pars, including a 4-under-par 32 across the closing nine holes.
Kitata made the quickest start among the leaders, shooting 3-under-par 32 on the opening nine.
After birdieing the first hole, he gained another shot at the par-five seventh before adding a third birdie at No. 9.
Kitata maintained his clean card after the turn, making further birdies at Nos. 12 and 13.
He parred the remaining 5 holes to complete a bogey-free round containing 5 birdies and 13 pars.
The performances left Ugandan golfers occupying 4 of the leading 5 positions following the opening round.
Ronald Rugumayo remained firmly in contention after carding a 4-under-par 67 to sit one stroke behind the leaders.
Rugumayo shares fourth position with South Africa’s Ruan de Smidt, who also opened with a 67.
South Africa’s Slade Pickering, Uganda’s Deo Akope, Australia’s Matt Millar and Zambia’s Sidney Wemba are another stroke behind after shooting 68.
The second round will give Ogwang, Okoko and Kitata an opportunity to separate themselves after reaching the summit through three contrasting scorecards.
