Ronald Rugumayo produced a stunning second-round 64 to take control of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series at Entebbe Golf Club on Friday.
The Ugandan moved to 11-under-par after 36 holes, opening a three-shot advantage over Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko heading into the decisive stages of the competition.
Rugumayo began the second round one shot behind the overnight leaders after carding a four-under 67 on Thursday. He then improved by seven shots with his 64, taking his aggregate score to 131.
Okoko, one of three players who shared the overnight lead, followed his opening 66 with a 68. His eight-under total of 134 leaves him three shots behind Rugumayo in second place.
South Africa’s Slade Pickering climbed into third position on seven-under 135, one shot behind Okoko and four adrift of the leader.
Kenya’s Greg Snow also made a significant move and sits fourth on six-under 136.
Tanzania’s Nuru Mollel, England’s Matt Millar and Uganda’s Willy Deus Kitata share fifth position on five-under 137.

Kitata was another of Thursday’s joint leaders after an opening 66, but a second-round 71 meant he lost ground to a charging Rugumayo.
South Africans Musiwalo Nethunzwi and Sean Cronje are tied for eighth with Malawi’s Paul Adams on four-under 138.
Kenya’s Daniel Nduva and South Africa’s Ruan De Smidt complete the group immediately behind them on three-under 139.
Uganda still has several players inside the upper reaches of the leaderboard. Grace Kasango and David Kamulindwa are tied for 13th on two-under 140, while Abraham Ainamani sits alone in 16th on one-under 141.
Two-time Uganda Open champion Deo Akope is level par on 142 and tied for 17th. However, it was a dramatically different second day for Entebbe-based Emma Ogwang.
Ogwang had shared the first-round lead with Kitata and Okoko after shooting 66, including an impressive closing nine.
His second round unravelled as he dropped to a 36-hole total of 146, four over par and tied for 42nd.
That left Ogwang outside the cut, which was made at the top 30 players and ties, the final qualifying mark settled at two-over 144.
Among those making the cut were Ugandan amateurs Joseph Cwinyaai, Antony Otukei and Joseph Reagan Akena, who all finished on two-over 144.
Phillip Kasozi, Steven Odong, Kenya’s Dismas Indiza, South Africa’s Ruben van der Berg and LB Boshoff also squeezed through on the same score.
Rugumayo carrying hot form
Rugumayo’s rise to the top continues an impressive spell for the Ugandan professional.
He arrived at Entebbe after winning the Uganda Open and following that success with victory at the MTN Pro Tee.
His opening 67 on Thursday contained five birdies and an eagle, although three bogeys prevented him from joining the leaders.
Friday was different
The 64 moved Rugumayo from a one-shot deficit to a three-shot advantage in just 18 holes, giving him clear control of a previously congested leaderboard.
The opening round had produced a three-way tie between Ogwang, Okoko and Kitata on five under. Rugumayo and South Africa’s Ruan De Smidt were only one shot behind, while several more players remained within three shots of the lead.
Rugumayo has now created daylight between himself and that chasing pack.
At 11 under, Okoko at eight under and Pickering at seven under, the Ugandan will take a three-shot cushion into the next round as he seeks to extend his remarkable run of victories on home soil.
The Entebbe leg carries a $20,000 prize purse and forms part of the Sunshine Development Tour and Betway Big Easy Tour, which provide pathways towards the Sunshine Tour.
