LONDON. African culture is part of what makes the Africa Cup of Nations special for Fabrizio Romano, who hopes to experience the tournament in East Africa in 2027.
Speaking to CK Sports Africa after the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, the football journalist expressed excitement about Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania’s hosting opportunity.
“It is going to be amazing. I wish to enjoy it. It is always one of the best competitions,” Romano said.
“It is always about the countries, the African culture. This one will be amazing.”
Known worldwide for his transfer updates, Romano offered a familiar response when asked whether he would make the trip. “Of course, I hope so. Here we go.”
That was an expression of interest rather than confirmation of travel, but his remarks underline an opportunity for the three hosts.
Beyond attracting supporters to matches, Afcon 2027 offers East Africa a chance to introduce visiting audiences to its culture, destinations and hospitality.
Uganda puts tourism at the centre
Uganda is already seeking to turn that attention into tourism exposure through its partnership with the Confederation of African Football.
The agreement gives Uganda Tourism Board Official Destination Sponsor rights, placing “Explore Uganda – The Pearl of Africa” within the tournament’s promotional activities.
Broadcast, digital and stadium exposure will provide opportunities to showcase the country’s attractions to audiences following the competition.
“The TotalEnergies CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027 is the biggest tourism marketing opportunity Uganda has had in a generation,” UTB chief executive Juliana Kagwa said.
Her assessment gives a commercial dimension to the cultural appeal Romano described: interest in the tournament can also become interest in its hosts.
Kenya’s preparations include another international attraction, with Bayern Munich and Ajax scheduled to meet at Nairobi’s Talanta Sports City on January 5, 2027.
The fixture is intended to inaugurate the 60,000-capacity Raila Odinga International Stadium, with Bayern linking the occasion to building anticipation for Afcon.
These initiatives provide different routes towards the same opportunity, reaching football audiences before the tournament begins.
Romano hopes to be among the visitors, delivering a memorable welcome will give East Africa its best chance of turning that enthusiasm into lasting interest.
