Platinum Credit Heathens and Thunderbirds completed contrasting journeys to emerge overall champions of the 2026 Uganda Rugby 7s Series at Wankulukuku.

Both sides also claimed the season-ending Kabaka Coronation 7s on Saturday, adding the final circuit trophies to their overall championships.

Heathens finished the six-stop men’s championship with 112 points, 13 clear of Stanbic Black Pirates, while KCB Kobs finished third on 97.

Thunderbirds accumulated 121 points in the women’s competition, nine ahead of Nile Rapids, with Avengers finishing third on 100.

Their championships were ultimately built on consistency across a campaign in which winning individual circuits alone was never enough.

The men’s competition demonstrated that point particularly well, producing five different winners across the opening five tournaments.

Walukuba Barbarians opened the season by winning the Stone City 7s before Black Pirates took the Rujumba title.

Rams then won at Kyadondo, Heathens claimed the Lawii Rwodi 7s and Kobs took the Kyabazinga crown before Heathens returned to win the Coronation finale.

That meant Heathens won only two of the six tournaments, but their ability to consistently collect points eventually separated them from their challengers.

They came particularly close at Kyadondo, where Rams defeated them 12-10 in the final, before responding one week later in Gulu.

Heathens defeated Toyota Buffaloes 12-7 in the Lawii Rwodi final to claim their first circuit victory and strengthen their championship position.

Even after missing the Kyabazinga final, they arrived at the Coronation 7s leading the championship with 90 points, ahead of Pirates on 86 and Kobs on 82.

Pirates still had a mathematical opportunity to overhaul them but suffered defeats against Buffaloes and Walukuba during the pool stages.

Walukuba then defeated Pirates 20-7 in the quarterfinals, effectively removing Heathens’ closest challenger from the championship race.

Heathens took care of their own business by overwhelming Hippos 34-0 in their quarterfinal, securing enough points to mathematically guarantee the overall championship.

They were not finished

A 22-0 semifinal victory over Kobs put Heathens into the Coronation final, where they defeated Walukuba Barbarians 17-7 to complete their season in style.

Heathens won five of their six matches at Wankulukuku, scoring 132 points and conceding only 21 during the final tournament.

Across the complete series, they played 36 matches, won 26, drew one and lost nine while scoring 765 points and conceding 323.

Their points difference of +442 was comfortably the strongest in the men’s competition.

The women’s championship developed differently, effectively becoming a season-long battle between Thunderbirds and Nile Rapids.

Nile Rapids made the stronger start, winning both the Stone City and Rujumba tournaments to establish themselves as the early championship leaders.

Thunderbirds responded at Kyadondo, beating She Wolves 24-7 in the final to claim their first circuit victory of the season.

Nile Rapids hit back at the Lawii Rwodi 7s, beating Thunderbirds 12-7 in the final to collect their third title from four tournaments.

The championship momentum changed again at the Kyabazinga 7s

Thunderbirds defeated Walukuba Titans 17-12 in the final while Nile Rapids finished fourth, allowing Thunderbirds to reclaim the overall lead before the final stop.

They entered Wankulukuku with 99 points, six ahead of Nile Rapids, ensuring the two teams still had everything to play for.

Thunderbirds progressed through the Coronation tournament unbeaten and defeated Walukuba Titans 17-5 in the semifinals.

Nile Rapids also reached the final after overcoming Avengers 10-5, setting up a championship-ending meeting between the season’s two dominant women’s teams.

Little separated them

The final finished 10-10 before Thunderbirds were declared Coronation 7s champions following a coin toss, according to the official tournament results.

Thunderbirds therefore finished the season with three circuit victories, matching Nile Rapids, but their consistency across the six stops proved decisive.

They completed the series with 23 victories, three draws and four defeats from 30 matches, scoring 613 points and conceding 197.

Nile Rapids finished with 22 victories from 30 matches, but Thunderbirds’ 121 championship points gave them a nine-point advantage in the final standings.

In a season featuring six stops and 322 official results, Heathens and Thunderbirds ultimately reached the same destination through slightly different routes.

Heathens survived a men’s championship in which six tournaments produced five different winners, while Thunderbirds overcame a sustained challenge from Nile Rapids.

Both then ensured their overall titles were accompanied by one final piece of silverware, finishing the 2026 series as Kabaka Coronation 7s champions at Wankulukuku.
