Harry Kane ended England’s 25-year wait for a men’s Ballon d’Or on Monday, sharing the spotlight with women’s winner Alexia Putellas.

The Bayern Munich striker collected his first award at the London Palladium, becoming the fifth Englishman to receive football’s leading individual honour.

Brazilian great Ronaldo presented Kane with the trophy during a ceremony marking 70 years since Stanley Matthews won the inaugural award.

“I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special,” Kane said after receiving the prize.

The England captain’s success followed a remarkable campaign featuring 73 goals in 65 appearances, including 61 for Bayern and 12 for his country.

His goals helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga, German Cup and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, while England finished third at the World Cup.

Kane joins Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen among England’s winners, with Owen previously claiming the award in 2001.

The 33-year-old also collected the Gerd Müller Trophy for the best men’s striker, completing a memorable individual double.

“It was the best season of my career without a doubt,” he said.

Kane credited his teammates and coaches, including Bayern’s Vincent Kompany and England manager Thomas Tuchel, for helping him achieve those numbers.

Putellas claimed the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, reclaiming the honour after Barcelona teammate Aitana Bonmatí’s reign.

Former England striker Owen presented the Spanish midfielder with her award, adding another major distinction to an already decorated career.

Spanish football featured prominently throughout the evening, with Lamine Yamal winning the men’s Kopa Trophy and Vicky López taking the women’s prize.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente received the men’s Johan Cruyff Trophy after guiding his country to World Cup success. Barcelona’s Pere Romeu won the women’s coaching award.

Unai Simón and Cata Coll collected the men’s and women’s Yashin trophies respectively, recognising their performances in goal.

Paris Saint-Germain were named men’s club of the year, while Barcelona secured the women’s award. Mexico forward Charlyn Corral won the women’s Gerd Müller Trophy.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka received the Sócrates Award, recognising his humanitarian work and social initiatives beyond football.
