Achraf Hakimi and Sadio Mané will carry Africa’s challenge for the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or after making the 30-player shortlist announced on Tuesday.
The two are Africa’s only representatives for the main men’s prize, although the continent secured nominations across several categories before the October ceremony.
Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga made the women’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, extending Africa’s representation among football’s leading individual awards.
Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, Senegal’s Édouard Mendy and Cape Verde veteran Vozinha were also shortlisted for the men’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.
Africa has another three contenders among the Young Talent nominees through Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ivory Coast’s Yan Diomandé and Algeria’s Ibrahim Maza.
That brings Africa’s representation to 10 players across the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or, men’s goalkeeper and men’s Young Talent categories.
Hakimi leads 31-year African pursuit
Among those names, Hakimi carries arguably the greatest opportunity of challenging for the biggest individual prize when voting begins.
The Moroccan defender made 49 appearances during the assessment period, contributing four goals and 17 assists while collecting major honours with Paris Saint-Germain.
His achievements included the Champions League, Ligue 1 and European Super Cup, strengthening his credentials after finishing sixth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or standings.
Hakimi also captained Morocco during another significant international period, giving African voters a candidate combining individual influence with major collective achievements.
No African has won the men’s Ballon d’Or since Liberia’s George Weah became the continent’s first and only recipient in 1995.
The 2026 ceremony consequently arrives 31 years after Weah’s historic triumph, with Hakimi attempting to achieve something several African greats have narrowly missed.
Mané came particularly close in 2022, finishing second behind Karim Benzema after helping Senegal win their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title.
The Senegalese forward now returns to the shortlist following a campaign that produced 24 goals and 13 assists from 55 appearances for club and country.
Mané also collected the Saudi Pro League title with Al-Nassr, although competition for the Ballon d’Or remains exceptionally strong this year.
Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal and defending winner Ousmane Dembélé are among the other leading names shortlisted.
African goalkeepers recognised
Africa’s strongest numerical representation comes between the posts, where three goalkeepers occupy places among the 10 candidates for the men’s award.
Bounou recorded 30 clean sheets from 58 appearances with Morocco and Al-Hilal, while Mendy registered 28 clean sheets across 56 matches.
Vozinha’s nomination represents another significant moment for Cape Verde after the veteran goalkeeper helped his country progress beyond the World Cup group stage.
Reuters reported that his performances at the tournament were central to his inclusion alongside some of the world’s most established goalkeepers.
Africa also has an intriguing generation emerging underneath its established stars, reflected by three nominations for the men’s Young Talent award.
Bouaddi earns his second nomination after his breakthrough with Lille, while Diomandé and Maza receive recognition for their development during the 2025/26 campaign.
Banda and Chawinga fly women’s flag
Africa’s challenge also extends into the women’s Ballon d’Or through two of the continent’s most recognisable attacking players.
Banda scored 14 goals from 21 appearances for Zambia and Orlando Pride during the assessment period used by Ballon d’Or organisers.
Malawi international Chawinga produced 15 goals from 22 appearances and helped Kansas City Current secure the NWSL Shield.
Their nominations maintain Africa’s presence in a women’s award increasingly featuring players from competitions beyond Europe’s traditional football powers.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place at the London Palladium on October 26, marking the competition’s first ceremony staged in London.
The occasion will also celebrate the award’s 70th anniversary, with London selected partly to honour inaugural 1956 winner Stanley Matthews.
